Purchasing hosting can be a daunting task. In this post I outline some basic questions that you should ask your potential webhost before purchasing web hosting services.
What operating system do your web servers run?
The answer to this question should be a simple one. What would you think if a web host does not know what operating system that their web servers are running off the top of their head? I know I would think that it is possible that they are re-selling someone else’s service. We run our own web servers so this means we can use what our customers need. For most Linux is our operating system of choice although we do provide Windows or BSD hosting if requested.
What kind of technical support do you offer?
Technical support for the server that your website is running on is vital. Your web host should provide a short response time for issues and also an uptime guarantee. For web hosting The Tech Fellows offer e-mail and telephone support with a 15 minute response to service tickets. If needed we can also provide web applications support. We provide a 99.9% uptime guarantee.
What web server do you run?
We choose to run the popular web server Apache but can offer Microsofts IIS if needed. As of May 2008 an estimated 48% of all websites on the Internet are hosted from the Apache web server. [1]
What web technologies are on your server?
When purchasing a web hosting package it is important to know what technologies you have access to. For example, if your website was written in PHP, you will need PHP for your site to run. Some companies charge additional fee’s for different technologies such as databases. Each of our web hosting plans have the same feature set. Our hosting plans can also be customized as necessary.
What e-mail services do you offer?
We currently offer POP, IMAP and webmail for retrieving e-mail. SMTP is used for sending e-mail. As standard we also offer a full range of e-mail services such as domain forwarding, SSL authentication and spam filtering.
